Three years ago, Gotham lost both it's white knight and dark knight at the same time. Why? One was framed for murdering the other. Of course, the truth was Harvey Dent was actually driven insane by the Joker and pushed onto a path of destruction. He took out quite a few people before his apparent 'death', including Commissioner Gordon's wife Barbara. The personal blow was hard on James, and he admittedly lost quite a bit of faith in Batman's abilities. He refocused all of his energy of cleaning up his police force and achieved it to a degree – there were less officers on the street, but those left were infinitely more capable than their predecessors.
As for Batman? He's been MIA ever since that fateful night. Gotham lost it's number one defender, but with the body count he left behind, that was probably for the best. Vigilantes were far from a dying breed, though. There's a group of them running the city again, acting with far more efficiency than the lone man before them did – and that's really saying something. Not everything is as perfect as it seems, of course.
Cue the inevitable Arkham breakout. It filled up steadily in the span from the summer of 2007 up until spring of 2010, with a lot of new notorious names and faces. How'd the loonies get out of the box this time? Well, it was a little thing called an inside job, one with the Joker's greasepaint all over it. He's still just as adept at manipulating people as he was before, and now has a former impressionable doctor under his thumb. After the explosive escape, rumors also started flying around that, perhaps, Harvey Dent isn't quite as dead as people thought he was..what do you expect? This is Gotham. Extraordinary circumstances are everyday occurances around here. That, and it was about time for another city-wide war. Get your weapons ready, folks. You're going to have to make a choice soon: whether morior invictus, death before defeat fits you.
