Keys came down to the beach front after college to relax...to think things through. To loose yourself in the sound of the waves was one of the most therapeutic things he could imagine doing. The crash of the tide against the shingle calmed him in a way no drugs or person ever could. He felt invincible, as if nothing could ever hurt him whilst he was in this state of mind. Generally he just perched himself in the center of a huddle of rocks he had discovered on his first visit to the sandy Miami shores, it was out of the 'tourist area', away from the busy crowds, perfect for basking in the mid afternoon sun. Or for watching early morning sunrises, depending on how badly he had slept the night before, if he had managed to sleep at all. His insomnia tendencies were returning, along with the faithful irregular sleep patterns. The beach revived him.
However today he felt like a change. That's what he was all about, mixing things up was an important part of life for him. He meandered along the shore, running in and out of the waves like a small child does, thinking they can out maneuver the water...and then slipping and getting soaked up to the knees. He had learned from his childish escapades and now removed his shoes, the laces tied together and slung over his shoulder. He didn't mind too much if they got wet, but it just saved the bother of having to wash the salt out of them later. He was still wearing the same clothes that he had gone to college in, not bothering to go back to his apartment before coming here. Dark blue skinny jeans and a white teeshirt that suited his skinny-muscular frame- though probably not the most practical of clothing.
Keys without realising was heading up towards the surf shack. He knew that his sister hung out round there, her job as a lifeguard had her down at the beach a lot...but he made sure that he was well out of the way or was here on days she wasn't. Not that he was avoiding her, but sometimes it was just better that way. The surf shack was a nice place, and he spent a few moments wandering around it before sitting outside and just admiring the view again.

Why does it rain, rain, rain down on Utopia? Why does it have to kill the idea of who we are?_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Gracen tucked her hands underneath her legs and tugged the back of her white shorts down to cover more of her legs. The heat baked into her skin, and she knew that she was giving herself a sunburn by sitting in the beautiful sunlight without protection. It seemed absurd that something she couldn't even see could hurt her in that way, but wasn't that how it always happened? At least Gracen knew the consequences of her sitting in the light, but she chose to take them. It was worth it to feel the cheery warmth on her face. If light looked anything as beautiful as how it felt, she thought it must be one of the most glorious things in the world.
Gracen was sitting on the steps of an ill-used sidewalk from the employee parking lot of a hotel. She knew that she shouldn't sit alone on the beach; she was constantly hearing lectures from her sisters and parents about how she should play it safe with the buddy system. She couldn't see attackers coming, and they would take advantage of her the second they saw her, apparently. Clearly the Harlowes didn't understand that Gracen had the hearing of a dog, or a bird. She could sense when things were going to happen to her. And right now the silence of the beach was unnerving her, which she took as a sign to pack up and move on down to a more populated section, where chances are she'd be left alone.
Gracen slung her backpack over her back - she found it easier to carry around than a shoulder bag that always fell off her arm or slung into people - and picked up her stick, spreading it slowly around the ground in front of her as she moved down the beach. It took her a few moments to cover any distance, because walking on the beach was perilous for a person who couldn't see. There were always sand castles to stumble through, or ditches of water to trip into. But Gracen took her time, and after several moments heard sounds that alerted her to the fact that she was near the Surf Shack.
Gracen had just decided to pass the Surf Shack and sit down in the middle of the beach, where she'd be fairly inconspicuous but in a populated place if she needed assistance, when her cane collided with something. From the sounds of it, it could have been a person.
"Shit," mumbled Grace to herself as she felt her face heat up.
"I am so sorry," she said a little bit louder, hoping that if it wasn't a person, she was at least far enough away from anyone that they wouldn't think she was crazy for apologizing to an inanimate object.

Keys was just readying himself to get up and walk back home when he felt something hit his head. Well actually, the strange thing was he heard it first. A loud crack as a white line struck him on the head as he turned to stand up. Then he felt it, a thudding kind of pain that made him fall back onto his haunches with a muffled, "owww whattefrick?". He closed his eyes for a second, sun in his eyes now, but heard her flustered apology. "It's okay, don't worry, just a few brain cells...they weren't being used anyway..." He smiled to himself. In any unpleasant or awkward situtation he generally ended up taking the mick out of himself, it was something he always did. I think people called it, 'breaking the ice', but he never listened to what many people said anyway.
He turned around once again. A bit more wary this time, though he knew it was unlikely to happen again (or so he hoped, it had been a good wack). Looking up he saw a girl, she looked familiar. Wavy brown hair and matching eyes, dressed in a red top and white shorts. Practically perfect in every way, except for the beginnings of sunburn on her legs. He couldn't help but wonder how he knew that face...
And then it clicked. Or rather the answer had recently tapped him on the noggin. The white cane. She was blind. With that very thought he realised that he knew her name. Standing up quickly, he managed to stutter out. "Gracen?...I-I didn't think I'd ever see you again!" He reached out to hug her, before pulling back. It had been years, so many years. She might not even know him now, might not even remember the times they had spent together. Shit. He hadn't told her his name. "It's me...Key...Sebastian..." He hoped she recognised him, though his voice had changed he seemed to remember that she had a talent for figuring out sounds. One sense goes and another is enhanced. She had never told him how she became blind, whether she was born with it or not, and he had never thought to ask. It was just something else, a character trait. To him it had never defined her as a person. Now that red top, that was something you could define a person on.
notes: I thought it would be appropriate, glad you approve.

Why does it rain, rain, rain down on Utopia? Why does it have to kill the idea of who we are?_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Shit. It had been a person. Shit, shit, shit. Gracen colored immediately, longing to rush into the surf and be covered until she could no longer humiliate herself, but she knew that she had no such hope of escape. Running into the surf would be suicide. Or the person would follow her and save her, and she'd have a lot more to be sorry for than whacking the person upside the head. At least, from the thunk of her stick, that's what it had sounded like she hit.
"I am so, so sorry," she said quickly, reaching her hand out to the guy before pulling it back just as quickly. "Are you...bleeding, or anything? Is there anything I can do? Honestly, I can be brutal with this thing, but assaulting you was entirely unintentional."
There she was, babbling again like a blooming idiot, and then he said her name. And that kind of freaked her out more than anything so far. Had her whack in the head suddenly given him the magical power to know who she was? Because she didn't recognize his voice, except that -
"Keys! It's you? But you're not here anymore, I haven't seen you in years. What would you be doing on the beach in Miami?"
Memories came flooding back to her of the kind, crazy boy who had been her summer fling, if that was the appropriate way to talk about a summer best friend that she'd had a child. She remembered how he always brought out the adventurous side of her, and how he never left her behind just because she was technically handicapped. And she remembered just as clearly how he had always left at the end of the summer, and she had spent the whole year trying to recreate that feeling of freedom and power that she had when she was with him. With him, she felt like a whole person, and she quickly reached out to him, making contact with his arm and squeezing it.
He sounded like he had changed from the last time she saw them, when they had been similar in height and build. Now he sounded older, and his voice was deeper, and although she could tell that it was the same Keys underneath, she was a little bit thrown by his adult-like exterior. Were they really growing up? Was she as different from the tiny child Gracen as Keys was from his 8 year old past-self?
